The Senior Communications Advisor provides direction, advice and planning for strategic communications across the Government of the Northwest Territories, including to Ministers and Departments. This role both provides direct communications advice and programs for Ministers, and provides advice to Departments to shape their own communications in alignment with the overall messages and priorities of GNWT.
The Senior Communications Advisor is part of the Cabinet Communications team which aims to support Premier and Cabinet in their work on behalf of residents and stakeholders. The Cabinet Communications team provides strategic communications direction across GNWT, prepares and delivers political communications, engages in media relations and deals with issues management.
Reporting to the Manager, Cabinet Communications, the Senior Communications Advisor provides a range of strategic communications advice, direction and planning. This includes developing and approving communications plans; providing advice to Ministers and departments; developing communications materials; managing relationships and supporting issues management. The Senior Communications Advisor works with a portfolio of Ministers and departments and must assist them to align their communications to the broader GNWT picture and priorities, and also convey their priorities and opportunities back to Cabinet Communications.
Together, the team must be organized, aligned and responsible to ensure that its work is timely, accurate and aligned to priorities and frameworks. The environment is complex in terms of stakeholders and subject matter, with many moving parts.

The Senior Communications Advisor will have the theoretical knowledge typically obtained with a degree in communications, public relations, political science, public administration or a relevant field, and five to seven years of progressive communications experience in a northern environment. Communications experience within the GNWT, or experience in management positions, is considered an asset.
